One thing you can always count on in chivalry, is about 1/20 guys that you encounter, will be a smurf. This has been a confusing topic for many since the game's launch and still baffles many people today.
So what is smurfing, you ask. Smurfing is when a player is using a alternative account to hide his/her identity while playing the game...Sounds harmless and yes it is, we agree but we still scratch our heads from time to time as to the reasons why smurfing exists in a arcade game like chiv in the first place. We understand the logic of smurfing in a large scale MMO for example, when your reputation is much more of an issue that will follow you around, because, by their nature, MMO's are about social interactions and having a good/bad reputation is crucial for your long term success in a MMO.
But where does smurfing fit into a 'pick up and play' game like Chivalry? We spoke to some of chivalry's biggest smurf advocates to hear their side of the story. In a statement given to the Chivalry times, 'French Dusty' had this to say "Smurfing has been around since the beginning of the game, and I dont think its going anywhere soon. I don't know why I did it, I guess if I was having a bad day, you know, missing my attacks and losing most of my fights then I would switch to my smurf account, it was better to lose on a unknown account instead of allowing a mid tier player get the better of me on my main. If I am being honest I think most guys just that do it out of ego, they really believe that people give a damn when they see them online and give even more a damn if they can beat them that day, its all bullshit. No One cares but try telling that to the smurfs"
Intrigued by Dusty Comments we contacted another well known player, who wished to remain anonymous, out of fears of backlash from the community, so lets call him Kian with a Z. KianZ told The Chivalry times "I am not a fan of smurfing and generally don't do it much. I feel players should stick to his/her main account and focus on that. It's hard enough to stand out in the crowd these days, without confusing people with constant name changing and smurfing. As the greatest maa worldwide I feel I have already made a mark in game and well... I think if you where to ask anyone that knows me, I think I am pretty well respected too...(this reporter had to fake a cough to hold back the giggle), I am not so big headed to think that anyone gives a shit if they beat me on my maa account. We all lose now and then, its part of the game...I dont see the shame in it. Guys really beleive they are special and go to great lengths to prove it. I will never understand it.."
So is that the reason for the big obsession with smurfing? Could it merely be that they do not want to be killed on their ultra rare pink helmet wearing rank exploited 60 badass accounts? Has the average players sense really dropped so low that they actually beleive this stuff? These fake vetts (we say fake vetts for the sake of remaining factual, hardly any of these rank 60s today are actually around long enough to be vetts) think they are so important that they must 'keep up appearences' and rarely be seen to lose to mid tier players? Or is there another side to this story. One other possibility suggest to us by by Kian with a Z was this: "people do it for scrimming other clans too. I forgot to mention that yesterday on the phone, A Lot of the comp guys believe that some clans won't scrim vs their clan if they have Player X in their lineup, so they feel they are forced into making a fake account to scrim with." This writer nearly choked with laughter after hearing this statement and had to quickly recompose himself. It is the opinion of this writer that smurfing because you THINK the other clan will refuse to scrim your clan just because you will be taking part in it is, again, a ridiculous display of ego. We are willing to bet our genuinely earned gold helms/ranks that, despite the fantasy you have about yourselfs being a feared player, with the power to make entire clans backdown, you are infact just, Deluded.
